Rakugo AR
8th Wall / WebAR
Rakugo AR (8th Wall / WebAR) was a collaborative augmented reality project developed with Osaka Electro-Communication University to bring traditional rakugo storytelling into an accessible digital experience. The initiative used WebAR technologies (including 8th Wall/WebXR) to allow users to view an AR performance of rakugo directly through a smartphone browser without an app. As part of the development, motion capture sessions were held with master storyteller Katsura Beishi, recording his movements, gestures, facial expressions, and voice to create a lively 3D AR rendition of a classic rakugo piece. The goal of the project was to use AR to make this iconic form of Japanese comedy more approachable to broader audiences, helping spark interest in traditional culture and inspire people to experience live performances in person.
