KANKOBOKO XR Application

KANKOBOKO XR Application is an augmented reality (AR) experience released in July 2017 that brings the traditional Gion Matsuri festival to life through interactive digital technology. Developed in conjunction with the Kankoboko Preservation Society of Gion Matsuri, the application features a detailed AR model of the iconic Kankoboko float — one of the historic yamaboko parade floats central to the festival — allowing users to view and interact with its 3D representation on their smartphones or tablets. In addition, the app offers immersive scenes from yoiyama — the atmospheric festival evenings leading up to the main parade — giving users a sense of the vibrant cultural setting and procession environment associated with the Gion Matsuri. By combining rich traditional heritage with modern XR technology, this project provides both local audiences and global users with a novel way to explore and appreciate one of Japan’s most celebrated cultural festivals.
